Gothic Clothing

Influences for the Gothic style of clothing have evolved from various areas throughout history. The most common of these being Victorian mourning fashion, Heavy Metal Music and Punk Rock.

The style can often be seen as morbid in its use of the colour black. It is however a cleverly put together idea of antiquated and modern dress sense.

Fabrics popular to this fashion include velvet, lace, often purple, black or red in colour. Satins and silk and various modern day synthetic fibres. The genre often used metal in the look, such as chains.

The band Siouxsie Sioux was a huge influence in this field stemming from the Gothic rock scene.
Further musical influence on the style came by way of Marilyn Manson and Alice Cooper
Theda Bara who was famous in the 1910's for her dark eyeshadow has also influenced the movement

Designers started to appear in this area during the 1980's such as Drew Bernstein of Lip Service. Many US based designers continued to grow during the 90's. Labels such as Rose Mortem and Kambriel.

The style of dressing continues to be popular throughout the world.
